It seems every year we have to remind visitors of Great Falls that there is no swimming in the Potomac. Unfortunately, in the past couple days one person has died, and one other person is being searched for at this time after they made the decision to swim in the Potomac. Swimming in the Potomac is not only dangerous, but it is also ILLEGAL. Although there are many signs warning people of the dangers, and visitors often police each other, there are still those that decide to attempt to cool off in the summer heat by swimming.
Swimming the Potomac is dangerous due to the aggressive currents and many hidden hazards. It is very easy for someone to become stuck underwater, and not be able to resurface due to the swift water. For an article on the incidents, please visit NBC Washington.
