CJPVFD Responds to Chilean Naval Mission’s Need for Fire Engine

Cabin John, MD — Responding to the critical need for emergency fire equipment in Chile after an 8.8 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami destroyed much of the Chilean Navy’s fire equipment in February of this year, the Cabin John Park Volunteer Fire Department successfully completed the sale of its Fire Engine 710C to the Chilean Naval Mission. Engine 710C, a 1997 Spartan Quality Pumper, was designated a reserve unit after the department purchased a 2009 Crimson Pumper. In passing custody of the much-needed engine to the Chilean Naval Mission, James P. Seavey, Sr., the department’s fire chief noted that the “Cabin John Park Volunteer Fire Department has a long and proud history of helping other fire departments, both locally and abroad, when there’s been an emergency or an emergent need. Here, I feel a special relationship with Chile having trained volunteer firefighters in Santiago in 2002 as well as having one of our very own former volunteer firefighters now serving as a station captain with the Santiago Volunteer Fire Forces.” James L. Hunter, president of the Cabin John Park Volunteer Fire Department stated that “After the devastation in Chile, it is our privilege to assist fellow firefighters and this engine will greatly enhance their firefighting capabilities.” The Chilean Naval Mission will ship Engine 710C to Chile in November and the unit will be put into service immediately upon its arrival at the largest naval base in Chile located in Talcahuano which is approximately 300 miles south of Santiago, Chile’s capital. Rear Admiral Piero Fagandini, naval attache to the Chilean embassy will receive Engine 710C in a formal ceremony to be held at the Cabin John Volunteer Fire Department’s Station 10 at 8001 River Road, Bethesda, Maryland on Tuesday, October 26, 2010 at 4:30 p.m. The Chilean Naval Mission and the Cabin John Park Volunteer Fire Department hope to build on their cooperative relationship by expanding exchange and training opportunities in the future. The sale was negotiated by Gonzalo Peralta of the Chilean Naval Mission and Damien V. Alexander a volunteer firefighter at the department.

Fire Prevention Week 2010

Today begins Fire Prevention Week sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association. This year’s official theme is, “Smoke Alarms: A sound you can live with!” Remember to check your smoke alarms monthly and to change the batteries annually.

Here are some alarming statistics.

  • Smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a reported fire in half.
  • Most homes (96%) have at least one smoke alarm (according to a 2008 telephone survey.)
  • Overall, three-quarters of all U.S. homes have at least one working smoke alarm.
  • Each year, nearly 3,000 people die in U.S. home fires.
  • In 2003-2006, roughly two-thirds of home fire deaths resulted from home fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.
  • No smoke alarms were present in 40% of the home fire deaths.
  • In 23% of the home fire deaths, smoke alarms were present but did not sound.
  • In more than half of the reported home fires in which the smoke alarms were present but did not operate even though the fire was large enough, batteries were missing or disconnected. Nuisance alarms were the leading reason for disconnected alarms.

Remember the Cabin John Park Volunteer Fire Department is always available to assist with any questions you may have regarding installing or maintenance of your smoke alarms.
